If you practice a lot in the surf changes are your gear like PFD and drysuit are tested – even if you did not test it upfront. But when did you last check your cow-tail or towing gear? It is just as important. And if your gear is o.k. check the gear of the people you paddle with. We had an incident that really started after a towline got disconnected from the tower. He got the tow-set with the kayak he bought of another member. This person went to seakayaking camps and with that in mind the new owner thought the stuff would be ok. It wasn’t. Even worse he had a towline that was connected to the belt with stitching (not a ring). It just teared apart when real force was put on the line. It’s to bad manufactures and stores are willing to sell this stuff but a simple test of the gear would have proven this tow-system was not op for the task and probably any towing task.

The events that followed the break ultimately caused the damage as shown on the picture. Why no PE? Well most of the coasts in The Netherlands are sandy beaches. To bad this one crashed upon a few blocks near a small inlet.
